The Toyota Prius has been a game changer as soon as it hit the market. The Toyota Prius is widely known as a budget friendly gas saver. By the look of today’s gas prices, Toyota is still saving the day for many as the Prius is still touted to ease this burden.

In 1997, the Toyota Prius launched as a full hybrid electric automobile developed by Toyota. The Prius came on the scene as a 4-door sedan, but since 2003 has only been produced as a 5-door liftback. The Nightshade model that we reviewed was introduced in 2021, for the 2022 model year. Based on smog-forming emissions, the Toyota Prius is rated as one of the cleanest vehicles sold in the US by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Air Resources Board (CARB).

The look of the Toyota Prius is unique and stands out wherever you go. The Prius Nightshade model adds black paint to exterior trim pieces sits on 19-inch blacked out alloy wheels, black badges and black bumper trim. The Prius that we reviewed comes in a Karashi hue and by it being the Nightshade model, there is added black paint to exterior trim pieces. The hatchback body style of the Prius means there’s plenty of room for cargo behind the second row. The sleek and sloping front of the Prius serve a great purpose in aerodynamics.

The interior of the Prius has been updated with an eye-catching tablet style 12.3 -inch touchscreen, premium black SofTex-trimmed heated front seats, and leatherette upper door trims and armrests. The carbon fiber-style dashboard inserts add a sporty, modern flair to the car. I really did enjoy the large panoramic glass roof that lets in the natural light. The Prius comes equipped with a wireless smartphone charger, multiple USB-C ports, ambient lighting, and smart storage compartment. There is also an 7 – digital gauge cluster to add to all the tech in the vehicle.

Driving thru town, I was able to get around smoothly and efficiently. The ride in the Prius is not thrilling or exhilarating, but it was not built for that. It is a practical, eco-friendly vehicle. It integrates its electric and gasoline propulsion sources and fully delivers on its promise of fuel efficiency. The 2026 Toyota Prius Nightshade Plug-In Hybrid has excellent fuel-economy, being that it achieves an EPA-estimated 48 mpg combined (50 city / 47 highway) when you are using the 10.6-gallon fuel tank while on gasoline only. The hybrid function kicks in with the 13.6-kWh battery that provides about 40 miles of electric-only driving. The Prius is a bit sluggish when accelerating but will get up to speed a bit better in Sport mode. Powering 2026 Toyota Prius Nightshade Plug-In Hybrid is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that is paired with electric motors. The Prius pushes out a combined 220 horsepower.

Toyota equips the Prius Nightshade with the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite. It comes with features like blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, pre-collision system, dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert, lane tracing assist, road sign assist, proactive driving assist, automatic high beams, safe exit alert and a backup camera.

Toyota covers the Prius Plug-In Hybrid Nightshade with a pretty good warranty package that includes a 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty, a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty, and a 10-year/150,000-mile hybrid battery warranty. There is also a 8 years/100,000 miles hybrid system & electrical component warranty, 3 years/unlimited mileage for roadside assistance and 2 years / 25,000 miles ToyotaCare that includes complimentary factory-scheduled maintenance.

The 2026 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid sits in a competitive class with the Kia Niro PHEV, the Honda Civic Hybrid, the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid and the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid. Having driven them all, I am confident enough to say that the Prius holds up well to them all. The model that we reviewed was priced at $41,284.00 The Prius Plug-In Hybrid is a great choice for those that live in a major city and need a vehicle that is small and great on gas.  Please enjoy the photo gallery.
