After an eventful season of Auto Shows all over the nation and abroad, New York always wraps up the season with one of the most notables shows on the schedule. Leaving from the Washington DC area, I embarked on a smooth train ride to the big apple. For two weeks the Jacob Javits center is transformed into an epic center of automotive excellence. Whether you are into domestic, imports, luxury, aftermarket or even antique vehicles this is definitely the auto show that meets every desire. Spread throughout the show, are a good number of concept vehicles that show the consumer where the automotive market is heading.
My first stop at the New York Auto Show was “Supercar Alley”. These rides aren’t debuts but so rare and with such a high price tag that most never see them on the road or live in person at all. These are definitely the most exotic and luxurious rides that there is on the market. This lineup included the Koenigsegg One:1 that reaches 0-248 MPH in 20 seconds. The Lotus Evora that tops out with a max speed of 186. The Bugatti Veyron also known as the fastest car in the world with a V16 engine topping 260 mph. The Audi powered Spyker C8 Preliator wowed the crowd with its classic look that is inspired by vintage fighter jets. The Koenigsegg Regera was right where is deserved to be as one of the rarest cars in the world. The Regera is capable of 1,500-horsepower and 249-mph hitting 60-mph in 2.8-seconds.
The NY Auto show was a very exciting show all around but it be remiss of me to not highlight the historical exhibit that Nissan put on to release the 2017 Nissan GT-R aka Godzilla. Nissan showcased the different body styles of the Skyline/GT-R dating back to the 1969 model. Debuting in 1969, the PGC10 first-generation Skyline GT-R was introduced to the world from the Japanese.
Four years after the PGC10 Skyline, Nissan debuted the KPGC110 Skyline 2000 GT-R in January of 1973, nicknamed “Kenmeri.” Then in 1989 the R32-generation GT-R hit the market. The R33-generation Skyline GT-R came out in 1995. It wasn’t a drastic difference from the 1989 model, but it did have some slight variations. In 1999 the R34 Skyline hit the market and stunning the world making an official 276 hp. Also on display was the 2008 model and introduction of the Nissan GT-R.
The new GT-R is showcased with a revised rear bodywork and a new aerodynamic front end. The front end of the new Nissan GT-R has brought up a lot of debate, positive and negative. This new model pumps out 20hp more than last year’s model, topping out at 565hp. Along with passing out Sushi and Lo Mein noodles for patrons to munch on, Nissan had its master craftsmen, or Takumi, demonstrate the GT-R engine building and then sign autographs. This was a GT-R’s fan dream come true. I was truly in awe with this being one of, if not my favorite vehicle on the market.
The Governor of New York State, Andrew Cuomo, addressed the crowd at the opening ceremony expressing that the show is a beautiful showcase of what this country is capable of. There was also a surprise appearance by Usain Bolt during the opening ceremony car parade, in the 2017 Nissan GT-R. Many automotive brands debuted new vehicles leaving many people in awe. Mazda made the world premiere of the new #MX5 RF after winning two 2016 World Car Awards. Volvo proudly displayed their new S90 along with their $1,000,000 donation to Alex’s Lemonade. This charity is extremely important in the fight against childhood cancer.
Maserati debuts its first ever SUV named the Levante. Acura made a grand appearance of the refined & restyled 2017 Acura MDX. Immediately after the MDX was shown the good people over at Acura allowed us a first look at the Acura NSX GT3. Mercedes-Benz joined in the excitement by showcasing the Mercedes AMG E 43 as well as the newest member of the Mercedes AMG family, the Mercedes-AMG C 63 Cabriolet. Audi also made a grand entrance when debuting the Audi R8 Spyder V10. Our German friends over at BMW decided to give us the first look at the BMW M7 and boy was it a sight to see.
There is so much that the New York Auto Show has to offer that I just can’t fit into this article. If you aren’t in New York, find a way to New York to experience this magnificent show in such a great city. Please enjoy the photo gallery.
