Over 50,000 people covered Audi Field for day full of fun, music, food and healthy living. A Live Nation Urban event, The Broccoli City 2-day music festival filled Southwest DC with good vibes and a weekend full of culture filled events. The Broccoli City Festival is an eco-inspired music and art festival that takes this opportunity to bring in urban millennials from around the world to learn about healthy eating and environmental sustainability.
Before we even get to the lineup, let’s discuss the new venue. The Broccoli City festival was held at Washington DC’s newest stadium, Audi Field in Navy Yard DC – located at 100 Potomac Ave SW, Washington, DC 20024. In 2013, the first Broccoli City Festival was only a few blocks away at the Half Street Fairground, so you can truly see the level up. The vibe is still the same as the festival continues to promote living “eco-friendly” while maintaining a more sustainable lifestyle.
Upon entering the festival grounds, patrons were greeted by artistic Broccoli City inspired murals from the Lilac District. Audi also had electric vehicles stationed throughout the venue that fit the Broccoli City Festival theme.
The Broccoli City Festival had a garden display, food trucks, live-art installations, a pop-up market managed by Angel Gregorio, owner of Black and Forth as well as the Spice Suite. There was also a nice kickback area curated by the Sandlot. Every Sandlot location is known for friends, fun and good vibes. This pop up experience was no different with the execution led by the owners Ian “Ican” Callendar and Kevin “Scooty” Hallums. There were also many panels and a plethora of resources about how to live a healthier life. To be in one place, with so many creative minds, was very refreshing and exciting for me and many others. Broccoli City’s organizers are working to ensure that its message isn’t lost amid growing popularity.
“Since we launched on Earth Day in 2013, BC Fest has showcased the most groundbreaking artists in music and empowered over 20 thousand millennials to become change agents in their community,” said Broccoli City co-founder, Brandon McEachern. “Music is one of the most powerful ways to bring people together, so we’re confident this lineup does just that and look forward to delivering another impactful event.”
Tickets were also earned through the ChipN campaign. Darryl Perkins is the founder and managing director at Chip’N and leading the charge in engaging millennials to help build their communities by being active participants through community service actions. Volunteers earned a ticket to the festival by participating in community gardening, preparing meals for the homeless, collecting trash and recycling materials, amongst other activities.
This year’s Broccoli City Festival had a wide range of A1 artists with headlining acts such as Megan Thee Stallion, Gunna, Lil Yachty, PartyNextDoor, Victoria Monet, Kaytranada, Key Glock, Sexyy Red, Concrete Family and many more that showed out on the stage and gave the crowd memorable performances. There was also live experiences with Issa Rae, comedians Desi Banks and Funny Marco, Uncle Waffles, TrapSoul Karaoke hosted by Bryson Tiller, just to name a few.
I must send a huge thanks to the Broccoli City team for making this event happen, continuing to give the Washington DC area yet another spectacular event to look forward to. The team is compiled of co-founder Brandon McEachern, co-founder Marcus Allen, Jermon Williams and Darryl Perkins. There are more people involved with this project, to many to name, but their hard work does not go unnoticed and is appreciated.
