The Chevrolet Silverado has come as long way since it launched in 1999. It is known as a series of full-size pickup trucks, chassis cab trucks, and medium-duty trucks. During my time Texas, the great people over at Chevrolet and Prestige supplied me with the 2026 Silverado 1500 ZR2 to conduct a review on it. The ZR2 version of the Silverado is the off-road focused edition of the pickup truck but it is sporty and luxurious as well. The ZR2 was introduced in 2022. The ZR2 is placed between High Country and LTZ.
Upon first look you notice the rugged exterior features the redesigned front fascia and an open gloss-black grille that has a dark Vader-chrome ZR2 badge. The Flowtie emblem has a hollow Chevy “flowtie” badge to maximize airflow directly to the engine bay. The lighting on the ZR2 has blacked-out headlamp housings with daytime running LED lights and integrated fog lamps. The ZR2 has a factory 2-inch suspension lift and 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory mud-terrain tires wrapping 18″ aluminum machined face wheels. The model ZR2 that we received came in a White Sands hue.
The ZR2 takes off-road capability to the next level with serious adventure-ready equipment. This is perfect for tailgating, camping or helping to pass the work day along. The truck also has LED cargo lighting, factory-installed Chevytec spray-on bedliner and a Multi-Flex tailgate that is capable of configuring into six distinct entry and workspace functions. The ZR2 has step bumpers that are integrated in the corner of the gloss-black rear bumper.
The interior is laid out in jet black and graystone trim. The two-tone leather color scheme comes complete with yellow stitching. The Silverado is decked out with a heated and leather wrapped steering wheel and a premium leather-trimmed instrument panel. The ZR2 has 10-way power-adjustable, heated, and ventilated front bucket seats that have the “ZR2” logo embroidered on them. I loved how the ZR2 had storage compartments built into the rear seatbacks, along with the folding center armrest. The ZR2 also has a wireless charging pad, multiple USB ports, and a 120-volt AC power outlet on the center console that is enough to keep the whole crew charged up as you are riding around. There is a good amount of space in the ZR2, with plenty of back support in the seats for long rides.
The ZR2 comes with a standard 13.4-inch diagonal infotainment touchscreen that controls Navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and many other apps. Alongside that is a 12.3-inch instrument cluster, a 7-Speaker Bose premium series with center point surround sound, SiriusXM satellite radio, a heads-up display that is multi-color and projects vital driving metrics and off-road angles onto the windshield. I had to keep reminding myself that this in indeed a work truck because it has all the features, that most of the luxury vehicles that I receive to review have in them.
The ZR2 has a 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 engine delivering 420 Horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. of torque, paired with a 10-Speed automatic transmission. This Silverado has more than enough power off the line. Whether on rough terrain or smooth pavement, the ZR2 moves efficiently with the uniquely tuned springs to increase maximum front and rear suspension travel. The ZR2 is off road ready with its’ Terrain Mode. This is ideal for low-speed, off-road conditions, providing extreme control. To avoid getting stuck, the ZR2 has front and rear e-locking differentials, which assure both wheels will spin together to keep traction.
I really enjoyed the growl of the exhaust coming from the ZR2. Chevrolet incorporates a high-clearance design that integrated exhaust tips into the rear bumper cuts, the ZR2 also comes optioned with an active exhaust system utilizing electronic internal valves to regulate sound volume. GM has a software update titled Sport Exhaust Calibration that programs the active valves to open wider and sooner during cold starts, cruising, and Sport mode, providing a throaty and aggressive rumbling sound. Fuel economy with the Silverado 1500 was comes in about average with 14 mpg in the city, 17 mpg on the highway and 15 mpg combined.
The ZR2 comes standard with the Chevy Safety Assist suite. The safety features added to the Silverado 1500 are much needed with features such as blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, trailer tire pressure monitor sensors, front and rear parking sensors, forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking.
Chevrolet provides a competitive warranty plan for the Silverado with a limited/ bumper – to – bumper warranty that covers three years or 36,000 miles, a powertrain and drivetrain limited warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles, Corrosion & Rust-Through warranty that covers three years or 36,000 miles for rust, and six years or 100,000 miles for rust-through corrosion perforation and complimentary maintenance that is covered for the first visit. Roadside Assistance and Courtesy Transportation is also included for five years or 60,000 miles of 24/7 emergency towing, flat tire changes, and jump starts. Courtesy transportation is provided if your truck requires warranty repairs that keep it at the dealer overnight. Now these are some great perks.
The Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 is in a highly competitive class going up against the Ford F-150 Tremor, Ram Rebel, GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X and the Toyota Tundra TRD Pro. The model that we tested is priced at $73,495. Overall, I really enjoyed my time in the 2026 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 ZR2. It can knock out the hard work and look good in the process.
