Toyota delivers the 4Runner in many different styles that consumers should enjoy, such as the SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road i-FORCE MAX, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, TRD Off-Road Premium i-FORCE MAX, Limited i-FORCE MAX, Platinum, TRD Pro and the Trailhunter. This go around I had a chance to get behind the wheel of the 2025 Toyota 4Runner Limited.
The Toyota 4Runner is a compact, later mid-size sport utility vehicle debuted in 1984. In Japan, it is known as the Toyota Hilux Surf and all 4Runners have been built in Japan at Toyota’s plant in Tahara, Aichi, or at the Hino Motors plant in Hamura which is a subsidiary of Toyota. The name “4Runner” was created by copywriter Robert Nathan. Toyota states that , the “4” described the vehicle’s 4-wheel drive system while “Runner” was a reference to its all-terrain capabilities and how it could “run” off-road.
Upon first look you can see that the 2025 Toyota 4Runner Limited is a mix between luxury and a rugged body style. The model that we reviewed came in a Heritage Blue hue. The 4Runner has automatic headlights, LED fog lights, and “TOYOTA” front grille. On the roof sits a rugged roof rack that helps with carrying more gear while being out on the road. Playing into the upscale look of the Limited edition, the 2025 Toyota 4Runner Limited comes with 20-inch machined-finished alloy wheels
The 4Runner has a higher step-up height relative to standard crossovers but the grab handles make it easier to get in. The doors also open nice and wide. Looking around the interior of the 2025 4Runner, you quickly realize that there is a lot going on with all the various drive controls and buttons. There is also a 14-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 4Runner that we reviewed came with a 14-speaker JBL premium audio system and a portable JBL speaker in the front. This is really cool for when you are in activity outside of the vehicle but want some quality sound to follow you. The center console is big enough for a lot of various personal items. The cabin is spacious and family-friendly, alongside a huge cargo area.
The 2025 Toyota 4Runner Limited comes with the i-FORCE 2.4L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that kicks out 278 hp and 317 lb-ft. of torque, paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission. It has the power needed to crawl over round land with features such as standard multi-terrain select, crawl control and an electronic locking rear differential. The ride is not as smooth as crossover or SUV but not as rugged as a truck either. The 4Runner is easy to maneuver and comfortable for long hours. The 4Runner handles well, accelerates strong and brakes on demand.
Gas mileage with the 4Runner is not bad, being rated at 20 miles per gallon city, 24 miles per gallon on the highway, and 21 combined. Not great but still a bit better than the other vehicles in the class. The 4Runner Limited includes the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 with Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Multi-Terrain Monitor, Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, and Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.
The 2025 Toyota 4Runner Limited sits in a highly competitive class, going up against the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, Hyundai Santa Fe Sport, Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Bronco, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Lexus GX and the Honda Passport. Toyota provides two years of complimentary scheduled maintenance or 25,000 miles, a Limited warranty covers 3 years or 36,000 miles and a Powertrain warranty covers 5 years or 60,000 miles. The model that I tested came in at $62,490.00. Overall, I was pleased with the Limited Edition of the 4Runner, but I will reiterate that it is more of a luxury trim. I would like to see how the offroad trims measure up. Please enjoy my photo gallery.
